Items which are not free to Import and required an Authorization/ Permission from Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) for Import are known Restricted Items. This Restricted Items can only be imported after having the Restricted Authorization/ License for Import form DGFT.
As per Trade Notice No. 47/2020-21 dated 23-03-2021, Issuance of Restricted Authorization for Import from DGFT-HQ with effective from 22-03-2021.Therefore, Restricted Authorization for Import of restricted items needs to be applied through online DGFT portal to DGFT-HQ.
To apply for the Restricted Authorization from DGFT, the Importer need to get permission from the concerned department based on their Import Product.

The Restricted Authorization for Import can be amended by adding New items Item Quantity, CIF value can be Increased / Decreased & Unit of Measure (UOM).
The Amended Authorization can be utilized until its Import validity period.
Restricted Authorization for Import can be applied for Revalidation with proper reason and revalidation period to DGFT-HQ.
It is a special permission issued by DGFT to import goods that are listed under the ‘Restricted’ category in India’s Import Policy.
Since restricted items cannot be imported freely, this authorisation ensures government control and monitoring over sensitive imports.
Any importer planning to bring in restricted items such as certain chemicals, machinery, or consumer goods must obtain this authorisation before importing.
In Free Import, no prior approval is needed. But for Restricted Imports, prior DGFT approval through an authorisation is compulsory.
Yes, it is product-specific and granted only for the quantity and description approved by DGFT in the authorisation.
