As We Know that IEC Stands For Importer Exporter Code.
An IEC is a 10-character alpha-numeric number allotted to an individual / entity that is mandatory for undertaking export / import activities.
Consequent upon introduction / implementation of GST, IEC will be equal to PAN and will be separately issued by the respective Regional Licensing Authority (RLA) of Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) based on application for DGFT IEC with a view to maintain the unique identity of a person / entity.
No export or import shall be made by any person / entity without obtaining an IEC number unless specifically exempted. Exempted categories are as under :

An IEC holder should update their Importer-Exporter Code (IEC) data every financial year between April & June months without fail. In case there are no changes in the IEC data also needs to confirm the same through online. Failure of updating the IEC may lead to deactivation of their Importer Exporter Code (IEC).
If you want get ie code registration first of all you need to register on the DGFT website, and login to the website by providing the Username and Password details. Next click on the ‘Apply for IEC’ option on the DGFT website. Fill the application form, upload the required documents, and proceed to payment option and click on the ‘Submit and next you will find Generate IEC Certificate’ button.
The applicant is required to submit online application with the following details / documents.
1 | Proof of establishment / incorporation / registration of firm or company | i. Partnership |
2 | Address proof (any one of the documents) | i. Sale Deed, Rental agreement, lease deed, electricity bill, telephone land line bill, mobile – post-paid bill, memorandum of understanding (MoU), Partnership deed |
3 | Proof of Firm’s / Company’s Bank Account | i. Cancelled Cheque bearing entity’s pre-printed name. |
IEC once allotted shall have permanent validity unless cancelled by the competent authority.
Only one Importer Exporter Code shall be issued against a single PAN.
If an IEC holder does not wish to operate allotted IEC, the same may be surrendered to the issuing authority i.e., concerned RLA of DGFT. On receipt of the request the issuing authority immediately cancel IEC and transmit the data electronically to DGFT and customs authorities.
