NLM (NATIONAL LIVESTOCK MISSION)

The National livestock mission under the Department of Animal husbandry and Dairying aims to revolutionize the livestock sector by targeting various challenges and enhancing a sustainable growth and development in livestock farming which in turn improves the livelihood of millions of people who directly and indirectly dependent on livestock farming and allied works in India.

 It also ensures quantitative and qualitative improvement in livestock production systems and capacity buildings of stakeholders including farmers, veterinarians and extension workers for improving their skills in livestock management.

It also focuses on reducing economic losses to farmers by implementing vaccination and other preventive measures to control and prevent various livestock diseases and facilitating in infrastructure development such as veterinary hospitals, laboratories and breeding centers for livestock development and market access to guarantee the fair prices for livestock products.

The Mission comprises of following sub-missions:

  1. Sub mission on Breed Development of Livestock and poultry
  • It targets Entrepreneurship development and Breed improvement in livestock and poultry farming.
  • It provides financial assistance to State government, individuals, farmers, and other allied organizations for establishing livestock businesses and strengthening and upgrading the breeding infrastructure.
  • 50% back ended subsidy will be provided.

2. Sub mission on Feed and Fodder Development

  • It targets in Establishing a network of entrepreneurs and their capacity building techniques involved in sustainable feed and fodder production.
  • Establishment of fodder block /Hey bailing/ Silage making units and innovative technologies are encouraged through financial assistance.

3. Sub mission on Innovation and Extension

  • It targets in the propagation of skills and technologies through workshops, training programs to farmers and other individuals in their capacity building in the livestock sector.
  • It promotes collaboration among government, private, academic and other research institutions with the individuals and organizations involved in livestock farming.
  • It imparts awareness and assistance to the working group in livestock sector on risks associated in this sector and benefits of livestock insurance.
